Walter Lewis
Walter Lewis maintains a the Maritime History of the
Great Lakes website (http://www.hhpl.on.ca/GreatLakes/)
and has a very broad interest in lakes history and
the related sources. He has an MA in History from Queen's and has served on the
editorial boards of Fresh Water and Northern Mariner. He's written
articles that have appeared in those journals as well as Beaver , Ontario
History , Horizon Canada , Inland Seas , the Dictionary of
Canadian Biography. These have all been related to Great Lakeshistory,
particularly the relationship of the shipping industry and government, and of
the business side of the
steamboat trades.
Professionally, he's a librarian. In the last
seven or so years that's mostly meant that he does web-oriented computer
programming to facilitate the digital delivery of information. The programming
behind the Maritime History of the Great Lakes site has largely been
proof-of-concept work for sites like Halton Images (and a few related sites;
http://images.halinet.on.ca)
and the Halton Newspaper Index (http://news.halinet.on.ca).
On the library side he's spoken regularly at the Ontario Library Association as
well as a range of other library conferences. He's also a member of the
steering committee for Images Canada
(http://www.imagescanada.ca)
and the technical committee of the Ontario Digital Library.
